The great fiction of science
Morten Schelde created The great fiction of science, a portfolio of eleven etchings which recorded his journey from Greenland across the Azores and Ghana to South Africa, as part of the scientific Galathea 3 expedition. Schelde was invited to join the expedition as an expeditionary artist, a custom in sea expeditions for which visual artists accompanied the crew to document their discoveries.
As the title suggests, Schelde worked at the intersection of objectivity and subjectivity: his approach extended beyond documentation of the researchers’ work into artistic meditations on topics like wanderlust, the urge to discover and accumulate knowledge.
