Per Kirkeby’s series of black-and-white sugar lift aquatint etchings mark his return to BORCH Editions’ printmaking studio after announcing the end of his career as a painter. They are prime examples of his characteristic mark-making and his ability to structure even small pictorial spaces dynamically. The etchings showcase his strategic mark-making, evident in the way he dedicates as much importance to the negative space of the motifs as to his brushstrokes; he guides the viewer’s attention to the untouched parts of the plates, to its scratches and random imperfections. The result is a series of motifs that appear at once light and ephemeral and carefully composed.
