Moon Memory
Nanna Debois Buhl’s work sheds light on overlooked layers of modern history. In her photogravure series Moon Memory she directs our attention away from the established narrative of the Apollo 11 mission, towards a lesser-known story of collective cooperation that preceded it.
The iconic photograph of astronaut Buzz Aldrin’s footprint on the moon is fixed in our collective memory, encapsulating the idea of the astronaut’s epic exploits. Nanna Debois Buhl extends the narrative by picturing the less visible parts of the decisive moment in history. Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon in 1969 but this was only made possible because of an enormous amount of dedicated teamwork supporting him.
Software engineer Margaret Hamilton led a team of programmers from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge) in developing the program for the on-board space shuttle computer. A team of female weavers converted the complex computer programming language of 0s and 1s into copper weavings, thereby creating the actual memory plates of the computer. While these plates were insignificant in size, they were crucial to the whole project. The interweaving of knots, ribbons, magnetic cores, and their importance are emphasized in Buhl’s close ups of prototypes of the woven Apollo 11 memory plates. Moon Memory highlights the entwined relationship between human and machine and the meeting between the analogue and the digital.
