Eng
For his woodcut Eng (Meadow), Tal R was concerned with the contrast between light and dark, between foreground and background. In woodcut printmaking, a particular ink is used to cover the printing plate; Tal R uses it to create the impression of a dense, impenetrable darkness against which the flowers shine all the more radiantly.
Not all flowers close at night; we see flowers in daylight, but at night a flower meadow is at its most magical. – Tal R
The round, stylised blossoms and thick stems are reminiscent of human figures, they bend and turn as if they were interacting with each other. Not all blossoms have stems – perhaps we are supposed to add them in our minds, or perhaps they are no blossoms at all, but stars in the night sky. In Eng, we are allowed to linger in the brief moment in which individual phenomena are indistinguishable and merge into one another in the darkness.
