In his photogravure series Details, Clay Ketter used photographic imagery to explore the ways in which we construct our world and our surroundings, and how we create norms for the design of our homes, infrastructure and all other aspects of our lives. Such constructions and, not least, their artistic reconstructions, are a recurring theme in Ketter’s work.
Using photography as a means of collecting and documentation, Ketter’s photogravures focus on the details of ordinary dwellings: the traces of a removed toilet or ventilation openings, tactile surfaces or clashing materials. In this way, he allows the viewer to see beyond their practical function and appreciate their aesthetic, sculptural qualities.
