The three large-scale etchings Martin, Stefan, and Jorn were Albert Oehlen’s first approaches to working with aquatint. Immediately grasping the possibilities of the technique, he created crisp and elegant drawings in sugar lift, adding subtle grey-tones in spit bite. The first in the series is a portrait of his close friend Martin Kippenberger who had recently died. In the second, Stefan, he isolates all the elements of Martin and rearranges them in a chaotic way on the plate. The third print is a paraphrase of a famous Asger Jorn ‘Modification Painting’.
