Tacita Dean | Bourse de Commerce, Pinault Collection

Installation view of Gallery 2, the Bourse de Commerce, Pinault Collection, Paris.

A significant exhibition of new work by Tacita Dean is currently on display at the Bourse de Commerce, Pinault Collection, Paris. Titled Geography Biography, the exhibition explores slow time in relation to the seasons and our own shifting landscapes through the mediums of film, photography, drawing, collage and printmaking.

The title work of the exhibition, Geography Biography (2023) is a 35 mm film presented in the darkened rotunda of Bourse de Commerce, and draws on an autobiographical cartography of the artist. Comprised of images from 20th century postcards from various parts of the world, they offer fragments of the life and memory of the artist, and according to Dean, the film is “a very physical manifestation of time: twenty-four images per second. When we work with a physical material, we are dealing with a physical time, not with something hermetic or discontinuous.”

The exhibition also features a series of four photogravure and screen prints titled Telomere 1–4, which were developed with Borch Editions in the lead up to the exhibition, over the course of more than a year. These works are an accumulation of layers of found textures as well as hand-drawn marks and screen printed images. The artist adopted the four seasons as the genesis for the works in Gallery 2, and within this loose framework, Telomere 1–4 represents autumn.

This exhibition was conceived within the context of the museum’s season Before the Storm, and will conclude on the 18 September 2023.
