In his 1991 etchings, Georg Baselitz depicts a series of seemingly free-floating figures. The pervasive green colouration does not serve as a mere background for the actual motif, but rather as an indeterminate, abstract space that envelops the figures as well as the network of black etched lines, in which they almost disappear at first glance. Occasionally, this network of black lines becomes denser; Baselitz himself refers to these the dark accumulations of lines as ‘stones’.
Baselitz is known for his cryptic titles, which often hold personal meaning for him, but are indecipherable for the viewer. The titles of his 1991 etchings are all the more remarkable, since they each refer to a specific pictorial detail – two fists (Zwei Fäuste), a beard (Bart), or a broomstick (Der Besen). They function as linguistic clues, guiding the viewer through the complex chaos of linework, encouraging them to identify the specific feature he equipped each of the figures with.
