When I leave the world behind
When I leave the world behind is made up of images of the soles of different pairs of shoes that once belonged to the same man. A K Dolven nailed the shoes against her studio wall and took out-of-focus polaroids of them, which provided the images for the 24 photogravure plates. The blurry images convey a melancholic atmosphere, and the sense of permanent departure is reinforced by the work’s title, borrowed from the Irvin Berlin song of the same name. The song is a reflection on the futility of material possessions in the face of the finite nature of life, providing the soundtrack to a touching visual inventory of mundane items.
