Anna Barriball’s 2013 portfolio of eight photogravures in based on photographs she took with an inexpensive autofocus camera. The photos were taken in Barriball’s studio, located in an industrial district in London, at night in complete darkness. Barriball randomly pointed the camera in different directions without being able to predict what objects the camera would focus on when the flashlight illuminated the space for a split second. The series of prints exemplifies the productivity of chance in the artistic process and explores the notion of abstraction in the medium of photography.
