Theme and Variations

For Theme and Variations, his second collaboration with BORCH Gallery & Editions, Iñaki Bonillas again uses imagery from his grandfather’s archive, a frequent source of inspiration for his projects. Among a collection of personal memories, family portraits and snapshots, a series of peculiar images stood out: after a car crash, his grandfather had documented the damage his beloved Peugeot had sustained in eight almost forensic photographs. Bonillas divided each photo into two halves and made 16 photogravure plates. He then had every possible combination of two of the 16 plates print, in what can be seen as an attempt to not only reconstruct the vehicle but also a piece of his family biography.
