The great fiction of science
In the fall of 2006 Morten Schelde participated in the Galathea 3 expedition. He boarded a ship in Nuuk and travelled to the Azores and Accra before landing in Cape Town six weeks later. He captured the impressions from his trip and the ship’s atmosphere in a large number of photos, which had the function of diary notes. These photos are the starting point for The great fiction of science, a series of 11 etchings.
Science is a central topic in Morten Scheldes art. During the Galathea 3 expedition, Schelde did not only have the possibility to look over researchers’ shoulders; he was also able to conduct his own, artistic
Before the invention of photography, a ship’s crew often comprised an artist, whose task it was to capture the events on board. Drawing does not longer have a documentary function in terms of the research conducted on the ship. Still, Schelde was documenting on board, but the point of departure for his observations was an artistic rather than a scientific one.
