Compared to his small, intimate 2014 prints, Per Kirkeby’s 2016 etchings document a rediscovery of the printmaking’s wide range of aesthetic possibilities. As the etchings’ scale increases, so does the degree of technical complexity that characterises them. Combining various etching techniques to create multi-layered, dynamic compositions, Kirkeby fully exploits the potential of the numerous gradations of grey, which at times collide, at times complement each other.
Due to a left-side neglect, a deficit in awareness for things on the left side of the hemisphere caused by brain damage, Kirkeby worked mainly on the right side of the printing plate. Since in printmaking, the motif is transferred from plate to paper in mirror image, it is on the left side of many of these prints in which Kirkeby’s marks accumulate.
