Girl drawing Lily

Girl drawing Lily is based on a series of sketches and paintings created for Tal R’s 2015 solo exhibition Altstadt Girl. Over a period of three years, while teaching at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie, Tal R portrayed women in confined interior spaces.

Some were acquaintances, others were strangers approached in the street. The awkwardness of this interaction is encapsulated in the works, creating a palpable tension between subject, artist and environment.

In Girl Drawing Lily, Tal R has lifted and processed selected drawings from Altstadt Girl, resulting in twelve new prints. Thoughtful, shy, curious and bold women move in and out of abstraction, sometimes merging with their patterned, decorative background of pastel colours. Tal R has combined the coarse structures of a woodcut with the delicate lines of an etching to give Girl drawing Lily a distinctive expression of its own.
