Mossa & Landscape

Andreas Eriksson begins new works with a thorough investigation of his chosen materials, finding their potential and the pathway of inspiration.
Whether it is paintings, weavings or graphic works, Eriksson first explores the inherent nature of his materials, testing their capacity for making the marks and textures that eventually form his compositions. Once he has achieved a deeper understanding of the materiality of his mediums, it is crucial for his creative process that the final works are created more intuitively.

In Mossa and Landscape, Eriksson began with the same basic composition and then allowed the individual techniques and materials to lead the development of these prints. The granular textures of the sand-blasted copper plates in Mossa evoke the delicate and varied appearance of moss, with each distinct area of colour in the print outlined by a fine white line. Landscape is constructed from individually carved wooden blocks; their distinctive grains meet and overlap like yielding tectonic plates.
In these two prints Eriksson began from a common starting point and by using different materials, he achieved quite different perspectives of his environment. This process is consistent with Eriksson’s practice in general where the material itself enables each piece to develop its own unique character.
