In Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy from 1320, he describes his three-part journey, beginning with a descent through hell, then climbing the mountain of Purgatory, and at last as a floating journey through paradise in space. Tovborg continues a tradition where artists, since the release of the Comedy, have imagined the three-part journey in map overviews. Tovborg has mapped the different sceneries of each book in three separate prints. In map of inferno Tovborg depicts the pit of hell like a funnel representing the underworld. For the second book map of purgatory depicts the mountain of Purgatory on an island, with a gate at the base of the mountain that you must enter to reach the top. In map of paradise Dante is floating out into a spherical space among the planets, towards God.
