Landscape I – VI
Matt Saunders has been working on a series of landscape etchings since 2015. In an allusion to Wallace Stevens’ poem Six Significant Landscapes, the series comprises six prints. Drawn from film stills, each of Saunders‘ landscapes is at once an empty scene open to projection and an emblem of the emotive and narrative currents swirling off camera. Together, the series reflects the filmmakers that have had a profound impact on Saunders’ practice and how cinema can evoke a longing for the unknown and mysterious.

Bamboo Forest is inspired by King Hu’s 1971 film Touch of Zen. Saunders wanted to capture and preserve the energy from an iconic battle scene in which the choreography of the characters fighting blends with the dense surroundings of bamboo trunks. In Saunders’ etching, the fighters are removed and instead the light and the way it cuts through the trees takes centre stage.
