Inselaffen (Alternative ending to the Bayeux tapestry No.1)
Inselaffen (Alternative ending to the Bayeux tapestry No.1) springs from the artist’s fascination with the Bayeux tapestry, which depicts the conquest of Britain by Norman invaders in 1066. For McNally, the famous tapestry is an ironic reminder of what constitutes being British. He is especially intrigued by the narrative’s open ending: The final section of the tapestry is lost, the narrative ends with the Anglo-Saxons fleeing into nothingness. The work offers a possible continuation of the tapestry’s narrative. It was created right after the UK’s 2016 EU referendum, recording the highly charged atmosphere and embedding the events in a historic context.
