13 Feet
Georg Baselitz’ profound interest in the etched line, which has characterised his printmaking throughout his career, is perhaps nowhere more evident than in the intimate line-etchings of the 13 Feet series, printed from small copper plates, in which the red colour of the lines bleeds into the negative space.
The study of the human body and its individual parts, often in extensive series, is another characteristic aspect of Baselitz’ practice. In 13 Feet he focuses on the titular human foot, which he depicts in various, at times whimsical, manifestations, much like an absurd inventory sourced from his own imagination. Turned upside down in typical Baselitz-manner, the condensed, poetic images balance the line between representation and abstraction; at times, the lines are placed so sparingly that, without their titles, the motifs could almost be perceived as abstract compositions.
