Tal R

Tal R Spiegel, 2016

The large-scale coloured woodcut Spiegel, Tal R’s latest collaboration with BORCH Editions, is one of the artist’s most ambitious graphic works to date. We are excited to present Spiegel in BORCHs Butik alongside Winter Sleep, a series of thirteen black-and-white etchings from 2015.

Spiegel is printed from three plates, the monumental piece displays one of the complex patterned, decorative interiors the artist is famous for. A large black mirror is the centrepiece of the composition. Both Spiegel and Winter Sleep take their point of departure in Tal R’s works from his 2015 New York solo exhibition Altstadt Girl: Paintings and drawings of female figures in confined interior spaces which he created when he was teaching as a professor at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

While being deeply familiar with the art of printmaking, Tal R keeps an investigative mindset when working in print, exploring innovative approaches and challenging the medium as well as himself.

Tal R’s retrospective Academy of Tal R will be on display at Louisiana Museum in Humlebæk until 10 September 2017.
