Stanley Whitney | Etchings

Stanley Whitney Untitled, 2016.

Stanley Whitney’s work is a vibrant statement for the significance of abstraction in contemporary art. He is best known for his works on canvas, grids of variously sized and proportioned blocks, separated by horizontal and vertical bands.

In his series of eight black-and-white etchings, he abandons his signature grid in favour of a more investigative style, skilfully exploring the potential of different etching techniques, often layering one over the other, thereby creating works of remarkable clarity and spatial depth.

Stanley Whitney, born 1946 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, lives and works in New York City.
