This year’s CHART Art Fair has been adjusted according to the current situation. In order to carry out CHART 2020 the fair will take place at local venues across the Nordic capital cities and online. Transformed into a de-centred art fair an overall focus on female artists unites all participating venues.

At our Copenhagen print studio we invite visitors to come and experience the art of printmaking by two internationally leading artists. Our CHART exhibition presents print projects by British artist Tacita Dean while the master printers are working on an exclusively new series of prints by Ethiopian-born American-based artist Julie Mehretu.

Tacita Dean

Tacita Dean is known for her analogue films. Recently she showed her 35mm Cinemascope film work Antigone, 2018 at Glyptoteket, Copenhagen in 2019. A clear connection to her fascination in film can be traced in her print projects, where drawn elements and hand written text initiates a filmic movement. Printmaking has become an essential part of Tacita Dean’s artistic practice since she first collaborated with our printmaking studio in 2001. Partly based on her films, partly created from found material like postcards or vintage photographs, she employs the printing technique photogravure to transfer her poetic visual narratives into the realm of printmaking. Dean’s intriguing photogravures emphasize the materiality of prints and we are happy to present some of her key projects for this occasion.

Julie Mehretu

During CHART our master printers are working on four large-scale prints by Julie Mehretu made from photogravure and etched copper plates. Printmaking has long been an important part of Mehretu’s œuvre, because it allows such radical experiments with the construction of images. Corresponding with the imagery in her paintings the new print series are based on concrete imagery, twisted and layered in her characteristic abstract spin. Get a close up impression of how the printing plates are evoking the final imagery.
