Critically questioning society and our relationships to each other, Elmgreen & Dragset’s works are an unceremonious, playful mix of art, architecture and design that brings art off the pedestal and into direct confrontation with the viewer.
Elmgreen and Dragset primarily create large-scale installations, often encompassing entire spaces or buildings. The duo’s artistic practice is occupied with questions of democratic thinking, transitory identities, inquiring gender and the power of sexuality. Performative institutional critique is at the heart of their practice – not only a critique of the art institution, but of cultural and social structures that have become so powerful that they start to control our thoughts and behaviour.
